This might seem like a strange title for a blog post on a Coaches website, but I think it’s important to know the risks when you make any decision in life. Risks can be good, they can take us outside of our comfort zones and propel us into new areas of our lives. But they can also be a gamble, for your time, your health, your money, any number of things, and coaching is no different.

Do your damn homework!

If you’re looking to hire a coach, doing your homework is the most important first step that you can take. It seems like everyone is a coach of some kind these days; whether they are influencing the fuck out of Instagram and calling themselves a Life Coach or they’ve been in business for eight minutes and they are calling themselves a Business Success Coach, a lot of people are looking for that unregulated mysterious side-hustle.

But this isn’t to say that everyone out there is a charlatan, there are loads of amazing people who have lived interesting lives, taken courses and training, and put in the hours and can call themselves a Life Coach with full honesty. They are out there looking to help you fulfil your own life and dreams, and they have the tool-kit, time and ability to do so.

The same goes for Business Coaches, there are loads of people out there who have started one or more successful business in the field you are hoping to excel in who want to help you. But it’s up to you to ensure that they are who they say they are, either by reading the content they share on their website or social media, check out their testimonials, or just straight up asking them.

Here are my credentials, to save you time.

So rather than you having to dig through everything I may have posted out there, here is my background and why I think I can help you.

I spent 13 years as a Network Engineer and Project Manager. Why does this matter for your business? Because I’m a problem solver, who knows how to take even the largest problems and break them down into actionable and reasonable steps. I also know technology pretty damned well, seeing as I spent a lot of my career actually building the internet.

I’ve taken Life Coach training through the Martha Beck Wayfinder Coach Training School. Martha was one of the first people in the world to be called a Life Coach, she’s a Harvard Ph.D. Sociology Professor, and taught at the Thunderbird School of Global Management for business. She wrote for O Magazine, has published 10 books on a varied number of topics, and runs one of the most prestigious Life Coach training programs in the world. Life Coaching has taught me so much about the human condition, our limiting beliefs, what holds us back, and what propels us forward. I take all of the wonderful things I learned in this training and apply it to my work now as a business coach.

Finally, I’ve started and run three six-figure businesses. First the photography company I run with my wife Abby Plus Dave Inc., a wedding and portrait photography company that we’ve run together for over 10 years. Secondly, I ran and sold a Photobooth company here in Calgary called Ready, Set, Booth! which has since been sold and rebranded, but at one point was one of the largest photo booth companies in Alberta. And finally, this very Business Coaching company, Dave Moss Coaching, where I help people just like you to succeed in your endeavours of Creative Entrepreneurship.

So what the hell do you do?

Coaching, in general, is still kind of a mystery to a lot of people. When I was taking my Life Coaching program I often was asked what made me different than a Therapist (I’m just going to go ahead and let Tony Robbins answer that one), or why people needed a coach at all for their life as they were getting along just fine.

Business Coaching and Mentoring have been around for a longer period of time but lately, things have been getting a bit murkier as more and more people enter the field.

Here is what I will do for you.

I will keep your ass accountable.

This right here, this is fucking huge. Especially if you’re on your own in your business. We have so many dreams, desires and hopes for our lives and our businesses, but then we spend 9 hours binge-watching The Office instead of getting our shit in order. Well, that doesn’t fly with me. We’re going to deep dive into your life and your business and lay out everything that is on your plate and figure out when you’re going to get it done, or even if you -should- get it done. Remember that part earlier about me being a project manager in my past life? Well, your life and your business become my new project, and my friend, we are going to manage the ever-living fuck out of it.

We’re going to set deadlines, and I’m going to text, or call, or email you when you said that work was going to be done to make sure you did it. And if you didn’t, well, we’re both human adults with a lot of shit going on, so we’re going to have a real conversation as to why you didn’t get it done, and then we’re going to set a new deadline. There are no grades in business, so you don’t fail, you just re-adjust and move forward.

I will have your back, no matter what.

I am going to be your biggest cheerleader and your (insert favourite sport here) coach.

I am going to celebrate your successes with you, seriously you’re going to get an inbox full of animated GIFs, you’re gonna see me dancing (terribly) on our calls, and I will sing your praises all over the damned internet (after checking to see that you’re cool with it). It can get damned lonely out there in the Wild West of Entrepreneurship, and sometimes we forget to celebrate our wins, no matter how big or small. Well, that’s not gonna happen any longer, because I love celebrating.

And when you stumble? Well, that’s the best time for a coach, because coaches get to watch you while you are doing your favourite thing, and because we have that outside view, we can see your miss-steps and help you correct them. Adam Savage put it best in his new book Every Tool’s a Hammer where he talks about failure being iterative. Failure is not a bad word or an endpoint, it’s the absolute best time to look back at what just happened and ask yourself “what the fuck just happened?!”. Sometimes that process is messy and hard, so we just don’t do it, but that’s where I come in, with an unbiased outside view of you, your life, and your business. We can sit down together and look at the problem, and find a new solution to it. Just remember, that even that solution might not work, because that is the entire nature of life and business. The difference between a success story and someone who failed at something is that the person who succeeded failed hundreds or thousands of times before they finally succeeded, they just didn’t let those failures stop them.

I will use all of my knowledge to help you succeed.

I don’t hold anything back, I am a completely open book, and I want nothing more than for you to succeed at whatever it is you are doing. I will take everything I’ve learned from all the books I’ve read, courses I’ve taken, conferences I’ve attended, and conversations I’ve had and sift through them all to find the things that work best for your business.

I am addicted to education. I have over 500 books finished in my Audible account, I listen to a bunch of podcasts on performance, business, and psychology, and I usually have one or two online courses I’m taking (right now, it’s SEO and digital marketing). I even have my own Business Coach because I practice what I preach.

I don’t say this to brag, I simply say it to show that I am dedicated to knowing as much about business and people as I can, so I can help tailor a specific solution for you and your business. We all work in different ways, whether we are introverted or extroverted, live in a small or large market, or work in a niche industry or an established one.

Because of that, I constantly study so I can help my clients, no matter their situation.

I will own my shortcomings.

I don’t know everything (see above and how much I am constantly trying to learn more), and I’m not perfect. Because of this, when I don’t know something, I will help you find the right expert who does. Need to completely overhaul your SEO strategy, start building backlinks, redo keywording and make Google love you? Well, I can help you with some of that, but if you need a deep-dive, I know where to send you.

Need help redoing your taxes and your bookkeeping structure to keep the IRS or CRA off your back? Yeah, I’m not even going to pretend I know where to start there, but I know people who do!

This is why before I work with anyone we have a consult that lasts between 30 and 90 minutes, where I get to know who you are, what you’re looking for, and then we talk about how I can help you. We need to be a good fit for each other, and I need to be certain I can guarantee your success, and if I can’t I will do my best to help you find someone who will.

I will help you build the life and business you dream of.

I want you to make more money. I’m not shy about that, or ashamed to say it. Money is awesome, it allows us freedom, helps us help ourselves and those around us and I want you to have more of it.

But it’s more than that, I want you to have a life where your success is yours. If you want more time to travel, we will work out ways to do that. If you want to buy a plot of land in the mountains and start a dog rescue in your spare time? Well, shit, you’re speaking my language, so we’ll work together to figure out how to keep your creative business booming while you physically relocate and add on extra responsibilities. Want to quit your day job and dig into this side-hustle full time? We will build a plan, create an amazing foundation, get your finances in order, and get clients knocking down your door so you have no choice but to tell your boss you’re outta there.

This is YOUR business, not mine, so we do it your way with my help. I won’t ever tell you that you have to do it my way, I’ll just lay the options out in front of you, and together we will go through them and decide what makes the most sense for your life and your business.

Sound Awesome?

So if this sounds like what you’re looking for, then let’s jump on a call and make this happen.
